Image : http://www.flickr.com

Here we have some information about what I believe to be the #1 camera repair issue: broken LCD screens.

We live in a throw-away society, it’s a simple fact. You buy that brand new fancy digital camera with all the bells and whistles for $400, and in 6 months to 1 year it’s worth maybe half that, and then the unthinkable happens: you drop it and it breaks. The LCD is cracked, or the lens is jammed; what do you do? You head back to the store with your poor little camera and the guy behind the counter (that knows nothing about cameras except for what’s written on the box, and even less about camera repair) tells you it’s not worth it to fix it and you should toss it in the trash. You feel ripped off and mad at the camera manufacturer and you toss it out and buy a new one made by somebody else.

There are alternatives, there are ALWAYS alternatives to every problem. Honest! Yes, it may cost $100 to fix your camera, and yes you can buy that camera in the bubble pack on the shelf at W**l M**t (they don’t pay my bills… I don’t advertise their name, sorry) for less than $100, but what kind of quality do you honestly expect from a $100 camera? Not very good quality I hope, because you’re not going to get it.

#1 – Broken/cracked LCD screen.

It was hard for me to choose between a jammed lens and a broken LCD screen but I stuck with LCD for #1 because it’s so easy to break your LCD that you don’t even have to touch the camera to do it!

The LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) is the view screen on the back of the camera that lets you see menus, playback pictures etc. The LCD is very thin, very fragile, and on many many cameras completely UNPROTECTED! Look at the back of your camera, is the screen recessed slightly or is the back of the camera flat and smooth? If it’s flat you have a protective ‘window’ or ‘glass’ over the LCD to help prevent damage and breakage. If it’s not flat, you have nothing protecting your LCD and should put a good quality LCD screen protector on the camera and NOT those thin, flimsy ’saran wrap’ plastic film screen protectors, they are worthless.

- Don’t leave your camera in your car in summer or winter. Extreme heat can cause expansion of the liquid in the LCD and cause it to ‘crack’, and on the other side of things extreme cold can cause it to freeze!

- Don’t put anything up against the LCD in your camera bag, it will bang against the LCD and crack it (yes, even if it has a window over it, it will break!)

- Don’t put your camera in your back pocket and then sit down!

- Don’t put your camera in your front pocket and then roll over on it.

-… Just don’t put your camera in your pants pocket please. =)

Ok, so it’s broken, what do you do now?

- The manufacturer will just site impact damage and will refuse the repair even if the camera wasn’t dropped etc. You can try, and I wish you luck, but they probably won’t fix it.

- Look for a defective camera on e**y (hey they don’t pay me to advertise for them…) and make one good camera from the two if you are handy.

- Look for an actual camera repair business and not somebody that will send it to the manufacturer and tell you it’s $200 and 4-6 weeks to repair. (IF they tell you this, they are NOT repairing your camera for you, they are sending it to the manufacturer, guaranteed)

Many LCD screens are very easy to install and you can do it yourself and all you need is a small screwdriver. Other LCD’s are very difficult to install, and even professionals don’t like to do them! I can’t tell you Brand…. is the best and Brand… is the worst, it’s really not like that. Certain SERIES of cameras have 1 or 2 models that are difficult to work on, yet the rest of them are fairly straight forward. You need to decide for yourself if you want to open your camera and try the repair yourself or not.

How is an LCD replaced?

With most Canon digital camera LCD screens for example (using them as the example because they have the largest market share) all you do is disconnect the ribbon cable for the LCD and the backlight (the light that shines through the LCD and allows you to see what is on the screen) and then install the new LCD. Some come with the backlight attached, some do not. Some backlights need to be soldered to the mainboard of the camera, some do not.

- Be careful to not touch the flash capacitor contacts! You WILL zap yourself if you do, and it will HURT a bit. You will probably throw your camera across the room when it happens. (Yeah, I’ve done it, I’ve been repairing cameras for 5 years now so….) We have ‘flash capacitor dischargers’ and use them every time we open a camera.

I hope this sheds some light on the subject. You do not have to throw your camera away because the LCD is broken, and you can even fix it yourself!

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Canon PowerShot S90 Digital Camera will become famous in the history of Canon as the model that revived the famous Canon S digital camera series. Last model from this series, S80 was released in 2005, and was retired in 2006. So, why did Canon wait four years to revive the S series? Let me tell you a bit more about the S series first.

Digital cameras from Canon S series were made to be compact, small and ergonomic with a lot of high quality functions to offer while remaining affordable. However, S80 was pawned by competition and the entire series were shut down. Panasonic LX3 proved that there still is a demand for pocket cameras and Canon decided to revive the series. Canon PowerShot S90 Digital Camera was made not to surpass its predecessors or some other Canon model, but exactly this one, Panasonic LX3. S series cameras were generally made to complement the G series, to offer the customers a smaller, more stylish alternative for the G series.

Here you can see key features of Canon PowerShot S90 Digital Camera:

•	Lens Control Ring

•	10 million pixels sensor

•	RAW shooting

•	Fast f/2.0-4.9 maximum aperture range

•	Lens covering the classic 28-105mm range

•	Dual Anti-Noise System (high sensitivity sensor and Digic 4 noise reduction)

•	3.0 inch PureColor II LCD

•	Optical Image Stabilization

•	Smarter Scene Detection

•	Low Light mode

•	DIGIC 4 image processor

•	HD output

It is more than noticeable that this camera was not made only with the “looks” but with the “gears” also. Entirely new feature for Canon, and most of other manufacturers, is Lens Control Ring. It is made to resemble aperture rings on analog cameras, but is fully customizable and can have many functions, like aperture control, of course, zoom, white balance, manual focus, AE compensation, ISO etc. Even beside this control ring, this camera is very user-friendly and easy to set up. You’ll never have to go through tons of menus just to adjust exposure a little bit or something like that. Combination of excellent interface together with manual controls makes this one of the easiest to use pocket cameras in the world. I dare not say best, cause everyone has a unique taste when it comes to that.

Camera design is made to be very sophisticated and compact, when the camera is turned off and the lens is stored inside the body of the camera it can fit almost any pocket. It is also extremely light, just under 200g; you will virtually forget that you even have camera on you. Canon PowerShot S90 Digital Camera can shoot more than 300 pictures with one battery charge (with the flash turned off) which will make it your new best friend when it comes not only to traveling or any other kind of trip, but also for a walk to the store or in the park. If you are enthusiast for these types of cameras, Canon PowerShot S90 Digital Camera is definitely for you.

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Digital cameras come in every size, shape, color, and price range these days. Obviously, adults enjoy the benefits of digital photography, but what about children? Should a child have a digital camera? Some experts say that when children take photographs, they learn to see the world around them from a different perspective and they sometimes show enhanced creativity. As a parent, you’ll have the privilege of seeing things from their perspective and may even learn new things about your child through the pictures they take with their own camera.

There are several levels of digital cameras on the market today and several are perfectly good entry-level models for children preschool age, up to teenagers. What should a parent consider when looking for a digital camera for their child? Ease of use, photo quality, automated features and durability are just a few criteria to consider.

A toddler, preschooler, or early elementary child will do well with a basic and sturdy digital camera. Look for one that is designed for little hands to grip and hold easily. Flash and focus features should be completely automatic, and the memory card should hold several photographs at one time. Fisher Price makes durable digital cameras specifically for little ones. The color LCD screen is 1.3″ across so children can immediately see the picture they just took and show it to everyone in the family too. Children can use this camera like a pair of binoculars with the camera’s two-eye viewing feature, which makes it especially fun for them to scout out their next picture. Fisher Price makes these cameras in bright colors for added kid appeal too. There is even a USB cord included with the camera so your child’s pictures can easily be transferred to the computer, once again freeing up storage space for more picture adventures.

Children who are between early elementary age and middle school age will enjoy even an inexpensive digital camera, as long as it takes decent photographs. Look for a sturdily built digital camera, because children this age often tend to drop things on a regular basis, including cameras. Find a middle of the road camera that has automated features for the most part, but allows some control over flash and zoom capabilities. Some digital cameras for this age include special effects features like clip art and captions and possibly the ability to take short movie clips with audio. Girls in this age range will probably want to accessorize their digital camera with a cute camera case and strap.

By the time your children reach middle school and grow into older teenagers, a digital camera that looks and functions more like an ‘adult’ camera, can be purchased for a reasonable price. Depending on how much your child enjoys taking photos, look for a camera with more advanced features and more control over the zoom and flash features. They’ll likely be taking more photographs at this age, so look for a digital camera that has expandable memory options available as well.

Whether you spend $60 or $100, the price range is reasonable when purchasing a digital camera for your child. Older children could be encouraged to help save toward purchasing one themselves. Younger children might be more willing to complete their chores if they know the money they earn will go toward a digital camera they want.

The good news is that digital cameras for children have come down in price dramatically, so purchasing one for your child, regardless of their age, is within most parents’ financial reach.

this camera was purchased under a budget i had myself stay on recently. i loved how small this camera is. its very conveniant for me to bring everywhere. i myself dont like bringing purses for some odd reason so i leave it in my pocket and it fits perfectly. the results of the pictures were okay but for the price i purchased it with…isnt too bad. try it out if you were looking for a low budget and cute looking camera. when they say it will be shipped between 1- 2 weeks it will take two weeks to ship it most likely

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Why is so difficult for camera companies to come up with one good all around digital camera that’s perfect for all occasions? I suppose it’s not really in their best interests to encourage consumers to only own one perfect camera, when they can sell them several. If I were more of a conspiracy theory advocate, I’d suggest they do it on purpose. But, I’m not, and I do believe there are other factors at work here. With all that being said, it doesn’t mean we can at least try to find the most likely candidate for best all around digital camera.

The three most distinguishable features or dividing factors when it comes to digital cameras are size, ease of use, and image quality. To lesser and greater degrees, these traits seem to be mutually exclusive when it comes to camera design and build.

Smaller sized camera designs are very portable, but usually affect ease of use and image quality in negative ways. The smaller a camera is, the smaller the controls are, which makes them harder to use. Single control buttons and wheels are often used for multiple functions which can increase user confusion. Smaller cameras often mean, that features like viewfinders get left off in the effort to add bigger LCD screens. Smaller often means zoom lenses are less powerful, and overall lens quality suffers. The most successful small sized cameras I like are the Canon SD1000 Digital Elph, and the Olympus Stylus 790SW.

Ease of use usually means lots of auto settings, which is great for newbie photographers, as little skill is required to snap a picture. But, it also means camera designers are forced to compromise on default settings that are OK for most pictures, but not great for all pictures. Factory set defaults will have to do until cameras become smart enough to detect all the nuances of a particular shot regarding lighting, color, and artistic intention. The Canon Powershot A570IS is one of the better cameras in terms of simplifying things at a reasonable price.

The ultimate in image quality usually means big bulky SLR cameras with a case load of lenses and controlled lighting for different types of shooting environments. SLR photography also involves micro managing of all the various camera settings such as aperture, ISO settings, white balance, f-stop and so on. You really have to know what your doing. The Canon Rebel XTi Digital SLR, or the Nikon D40 are good cameras in this category that don’t break the bank.

Olympus Stylus 790SW 7.1MP Waterproof Digital Camera with Dual Image Stabilized 3x Optical Zoom (Black) CustomerReview

and this camera is my buddy… I have the lime version and we’ve been almost everywhere together since December 2007. Just last week, I took it with me to a rock concert and got some great photos (more on that a little later). Even though I’m not much of a drinker since leaving college, I still refer to this as my “drunk proof” camera, because I think it would be absolutely perfect for a bar-hopping college student… you don’t have to worry too much about getting it wet or dropping it. I don’t worry about it when I leave it out in my truck in freezing temperatures. I’ve had it out taking pictures when it’s really dusty and the wind is blowing dirt around, etc and I just don’t worry about it at all.

The one time I did worry was when we were in Maui last May (2009) and my wife (who bought it for me in 2007) wanted to take it with us snorkeling. Well, what the heck right? The first time we took it out, it performed beautifully in the shallow water… no problems at all! Later that day, however, we tried using it in the hotel swimming pool. No problems with the few pictures we took, but soon after that, the camera ceased working. I don’t know if it had something to do with the chlorine in the pool or what. No worries – aloha spirit and all that, so I just left it open, took out the battery and card and let it all dry out. It wasn’t soaked or anything, but I had the feeling there was some moisture inside. This was unfortunate because while I had my Canon PowerShot with me, I wasn’t about to take that down by the water and the cheapo disposable camera we bought on the beach for body boarding pictures ended up getting ruined before we could develop them. A day or two later, the battery still wouldn’t work… the light on the charger would just flash like I was crazy for trying. Well, I was a boyscout back in the day, so I had a brand new extra battery with me. After charging that battery (and again, the camera had sat with the door open for a day or two to dry out completely), everything worked just fine… the XD card was fine – just the battery went bad. I’ve been using the camera ever since. Would I be worried to take it in an ocean or lake with me again? Yes, I would. Honestly, I’d probably just buy a high-quality disposable camera. I can tell you that I would NOT take it in a swimming pool again, that’s for sure!

Now that the water issue is out of the way, I wanted to address photo quality. Have I got some grainy pictures with this camera? Yes, I have. Did I try to change the setting to get better pictures? You bet! I feel that you definitely sacrifice a little bit of photo quality with this camera in exchange for some very cool features. However, if you’re willing to play with it a little bit and learn some of the settings, you can usually get it figured out and take some really good pictures. For instance, it’s very easy and fast to turn the flash on and off (just push right on the control pad) or push the flower button on the left side if you’re shooting stuff super close. The top button on the control pad for exposure is awesome… it will show you 4 different possibilities at a time, then press left to see darker settings or right to make it brighter… that’s a BIG help and is super fast and easy to do! Also, when I was taking pictures at the concert last week for instance, it was low light (at times) and I was not about to use a flash, so I turned the knob to the little shaky hand (between the SCN and the picture of the camera (auto setting)) and it did great! The local newspaper even put some of the pictures I took on their website! Of course you can also play around with the knob on the SCN setting… Sport is another favorite setting of mine when I’m trying to take pictures of moving people/objects. Available Light is another one I use fairly often. WHEN SHOOTING OUTDOORS (especially in bright sun), turn the knob to GUIDE and press down twice (3 – Shooting into backlight), then press OK (1 – Activate Shadow Adj.) and that helps TREMENDOUSLY! Without that setting, I would be in trouble. I use it almost 100% of the time when I’m outside and the sun is out (sometimes even when it’s cloudy and kinda bright). On a side note, the the movie mode works just find and is an additional nice feature this camera offers (I believe it shoots in WAV or some type of Microsoft compatible format – it’s not the QuickTime kind). I hope that helps a little bit!

In short, this camera is not perfect, but it’s still pretty awesome. You don’t need to bother buying a case for this camera! The battery seems to last forever, which is I take for granted sometimes. I do try to charge it up before going out if I know I’m going to be using it a lot (note: it does take a few hours to charge completely). My 2 GB XD card is almost full right now and there are 1800 high-resolution pictures AND some long videos on there! The main reason I can’t give this camera 5 stars is because, unfortunately, I would agree that it is questionable under water. Others might not give it 5 stars because of picture quality. It might not take the very best pictures, but I have taken a LOT of really good ones! I will admit that there was a lady next to me at the concert last week with a Canon PowerShot SD940IS (the red one) and she was taking, for the most part, a lot more quality pictures than I was. However, if your buddy spilled some beer on that camera at the bar or if you got bumped and dropped it or if it fell out of your pocket in the car and you left it out in the cold or if you took pictures in the pouring rain or maybe a dust storm… would the Canon hold up like this Olympus Stylus? I doubt it! This Olympus is one TOUGH camera! Take it for what it is. I might buy a Canon for a little bit better quality pictures, but this Olympus will always be my go-to tough guy back-up if nothing else.

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Have you decided to buy a digital camera, but the confusion over which one to pick has you overwhelmed? In order to make the right choice to suit your photography needs, consider these five different features before you hand over your credit card.

1. Camera Lens Quality

It costs an arm and a leg to build a superior lens with the best glass. Cheap digital cameras tend to use cheaper lens. Even if a camera has 36 megapixels, the image quality with a cheap lens will be mediocre. Camera manufacturers can’t afford to put superior glass in a cheap camera. If you use a digital SLR that has interchangeable lenses the quality difference between pro level lenses and entry lenses is immense, and measured in hundred or even thousands of dollars.

2. Manufacturer Quality

The materials that go into manufacturing good quality digital cameras cost a good deal of money; consequently the camera price will be higher. The cost difference between the aluminum, plastic or first-rate magnesium alloy is significant. This is even more so with a digital SLR. How a shutter button feels or the chassis strength on a pro level camera, compared to an entry SLR, you will find big differences which are again reflected in the price.

3. Sensor Quality

How a camera sensor handles light intensity and the resulting digital noise is affected by the design, the quality of the CMOS or CCD sensor, and the ISO rating. Try taking a picture with dimmed light and you will notice that in darker areas there will be flecks of color and grains. This is digital noise. Better quality cameras will have better light sensor and far less noise, or even no noise at all unlike cheaper compact digital cameras. Poor sensor quality degrades the image quality even when using an excellent lens.

4. Processor Quality

Each digital camera has a computer chip known as the processor, which receives digital information from the sensor and uses it to construct a picture. The way light is processed affects the general image quality. The more complex and powerful the processor is, the better pictures you’ll get and surely the higher the camera cost. High megapixel pictures processed by simpler and less powerful processor will yield lower quality image.

5. Higher Megapixels

10.1 megapixels on an expensive digital SLR and 10.1 megapixels on a cheap compact camera are poles apart. High megapixels mean nothing if you have a poor lens, sensor and processor. On the other hand, you need to use high megapixels to take advantage of a high quality lens, sensor and processor. Just like many things in life, a good balance is essential.
